European and American intelligence agencies suspect Russia is attempting to transport incendiary devices to North America using air cargo shipments, according to sources close to the investigation. Authorities are taking this potential threat seriously, and intelligence officials anticipate further attempts by Moscow to stage similar acts of sabotage.
In a related probe, Poland’s National Prosecutor’s Office announced it is investigating suspected foreign intelligence involvement in sabotage within Poland, other EU nations, and the UK, though it did not specify Russia as the primary suspect. However, Tomasz Siemoniak, Poland’s Interior Minister, remarked that recent incidents fit a known Russian pattern of sabotage, including attempts to hide explosives within parcels sent via courier to EU and UK destinations.
The investigation, which began in August, has led to the arrest of four individuals connected to a sabotage group aiming to test transportation channels for concealed explosives, which they allegedly intended to eventually send to the U.S. and Canada. Reports indicate that these incendiary packages were designed to ignite or detonate during transit. U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) spokeswoman Alexa Lopez confirmed that TSA has implemented additional security measures for U.S. and foreign air carriers handling shipments bound for the U.S.
Governments across Europe have voiced growing concerns about potential Russia-sponsored sabotage activities, which have been on the rise since the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine. Earlier this year, the U.S. warned allies of Russia’s possible interference with shipping companies supporting Ukraine.
Recent cases of alleged sabotage have intensified these worries. German security officials reported narrowly averting a plane incident when an incendiary package, suspected to be Russian, ignited at a DHL facility in Leipzig before it could be loaded on an aircraft. Last month, Poland shut down Russia’s consulate in Poznan due to suspected sabotage attempts, a move condemned by Moscow.
With Poland serving as a crucial route for military aid to Ukraine, both European and North American officials are on high alert for further actions that could disrupt air cargo safety and stability.
