Chinese businessman Yang Tengbo, previously known as H6, has been named as the alleged spy accused of developing close ties with Prince Andrew. A High Court judge lifted his anonymity, sparking public scrutiny. Yang denies all claims, calling them politically motivated and false.
Yang Tengbo, also known as Chris Yang, is a businessman who spent two decades in the UK fostering trade ties between British and Chinese businesses. He claims to have brought significant investment into the UK and insists the allegations are due to rising political tensions.
Yang attended Prince Andrew’s 2020 birthday party and was reportedly allowed to represent the Duke for business dealings in China. Evidence revealed a letter mentioning Yang’s involvement in discreet visits to Windsor. Prince Andrew denied any wrongdoing, stating all meetings were formal, with no sensitive discussions.
Yang was stopped in 2021 under suspicions of “hostile state activity” linked to China. UK authorities accused him of “elite capture,” a tactic to influence prominent individuals. The Siac upheld the Home Office’s 2023 decision to ban Yang, citing national security concerns.
Yang denies the accusations, blaming the political climate for the ban. He maintains that his work was legitimate, aimed at strengthening UK-China trade, and vowed to appeal the decision.
Yang’s case has amplified fears of Chinese interference, particularly through the United Front Work Department. Officials urge stronger measures, like the upcoming Foreign Influence Registration Scheme, to counter foreign influence.
Yang Tengbo’s case highlights rising concerns over national security, foreign influence, and elite connections. While Yang fights to clear his name, the UK government faces mounting pressure to act against potential threats.
